  4. Thank you for choosing to evaluate TextPad.  It got the PC Plus Gold
  5. Award in the May '95 issue, and it's a finalist in the 1995 Ziff-Davis
  6. Shareware Awards competition.

  8. Have you got the latest release?  Updates are available from CompuServe
  9. forums WINSHARE, WINUTIL and PCAPP as TPAD16.ZIP and TPAD32.ZIP.  You
  10. can also get it using FTP from oak.oakland.edu and other SimTel mirror

  27. INTRODUCTION:
  28. -------------
  29. TextPad aims to provide the power and functionality to satisfy your most
  30. demanding text editing requirements.  It is Windows hosted, and comes in
  31. 16 and 32-bit editions.  Huge files can be edited by either - just choose
  32. the edition that works best with your PC.  The 32-bit edition is only
  33. limited by virtual memory, and it will work with Win32s and Windows 95
  34. (Beta 3 or later).
  35.  
  36. TextPad has been implemented according to the Windows 95 user interface
  37. guidelines, so great attention has been paid to making it easy for both
  38. beginners and experienced users.  In-context help is available for all
  39. commands, and in-context menus pop-up with the right mouse button.  The
  40. multi-document interface allows multiple files to be edited simultaneously,
  41. with up to 2 views on each file.  You can drag and drop text between files.
  42.  
  43. In addition to the usual cut and paste capabilities, you can correct the
  44. most common typing errors with commands to change case, and transpose words,
  45. characters and lines.  Other commands let you indent blocks of text, split
  46. or join lines, and insert whole files.  Any change can be undone or redone,
  47. right back to the first one made.  Visible bookmarks can be put on lines.

  49. It also has a customizable tools menu, and integral file compare and search
  50. commands, with hypertext jumps from the matched text to the corresponding
  51. line in the source file (ideal for integrating compilers).
  52.

  56. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  57. ---------------------
  58.     16-bit Edition:             32-bit Edition:

  65. INSTALLATION:
  66. -------------
  67.     From a ZIP File:
  68.         1) Unzip into a new temporary directory, with PKUNZIP 2.04g.
  69.         2) Run SETUP.EXE using File Manager or Program Manager.
  70.         3) Follow the on-screen instructions, but install into a
  71.            different directory from that in step 1 above.
  72.         4) Delete the files unzipped in step 1 above.

  74.     From Floppy Disk:
  75.         1) From Program Manager, choose the Run command from the
  76.            File menu.
  77.         2) Type "A:\SETUP" to run the TextPad setup program.
  78.         3) Follow the on-screen instructions.
  79.  
  80.     You can install both editions into the same directory.
  81.     There is no need to modify your search path.
  82.  
  83.     You can associate various file extensions with TextPad, so that File
  84.     Manager starts TextPad when you double click a file.  To do this, you
  85.     must enable TextPad's DDE capabilities.  You can use REGEDIT to merge
  86.     the corresponding TXTPAD16.REG or TXTPAD32.REG file (or double click
  87.     the file with File Manager), but you must edit it first to give the
  88.     correct path to the TextPad executable.  It assumes that your
  89.     installation directory is C:\TEXTPAD.  See the on-line help for more
  90.     information.

  92. BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY:
  93. ------------------------
  94.     The 32-bit edition needs NT 3.5, Win32s 1.25 or Windows 95 (Beta 3
  95.     or later).  If you have NT 3.1 or an earlier release of Win32s, you
  96.     must patch the Windows subsystem in TXTPAD32.EXE using PATCHSYS.EXE
  97.     from the installation disk as follows:
  98.  
  99.         A:\PATCHSYS -3 TXTPAD32.EXE
  100.  
  101.     You can change it back again using "-4" instead of "-3".
  102.  
  103. RESTRICTED FEATURES:
  104. --------------------
  105.     The following features are only available to registered users:
  106.  
  107.     1) OLE2 drag and drop editing.  Local drag and drop editing is always
  108.        available, but scrolling has not been implemented.  This means that
  109.        you can drop text in the visible view, but you cannot scroll the
  110.        view whilst dragging.
  111.     2) Searching of subdirectories with the Find in Files command.
  112.  
  113. REGISTRATION:
  114. -------------
  115.     If you make use of TextPad you must register it.  Registered users
  116.     will receive a copy of the latest releases of both the 16 and 32-bit
  117.     editions, along with the Win32s and OLE2 files necessary for running
  118.     in 32-bit mode on Windows 3.1.
  119.  
  120.     Click the "How to Purchase" button in the About dialog box, or see
  121.     the file REGISTER.TXT for details.  
  122.  
  123. SETTING COLORS:
  124. ---------------
  125.     The foreground and background colors used by TextPad can be modified,
  126.     but there is no user interface yet.  To make changes, you must edit
  127.     the [Colors] section in TEXTPAD.INI.  Each color is specified by 6
  128.     hex digits in the form BBGGRR, so black is 000000, green is 00FF00,
  129.     light gray is C0C0C0, and white is FFFFFF.  You can only use the
  130.     sixteen standard Windows colors, so the nearest color will be used if
  131.     you specify anything else.  The defaults are as specified in Control
  132.     Panel.  Note that if you use TextPad to edit TEXTPAD.INI, your
  133.     changes will be overwritten when you exit, so use NotePad!
  134.  
  135. TIPS:
  136. -----
  137.     - Ctrl+Left button in the left margin selects the whole file.
  138.     - Double left click in the left margin selects the line.
  139.     - Ctrl+Shift+O brings up a simple dialog box for file opening.
  140.     - In the Replace dialog box, '\t' is interpreted as a tab in the
  141.       replacement string, regardless of the Regular Expression check box
  142.       setting.  To replace with the literal characters '\' and 't', you
  143.       must specify '\\t' as the replacement string.
  144.     - When the File Open dialog box is enabled for multi-file opening,
  145.       it does not show long file names (except on Windows 95).  This
  146.       setting can be changed on the Configure/Options dialog box.
  147.     - After you have saved the Search or Command output results as an
  148.       ordinary file, it loses its hypertext jump property, but you can
  149.       always load an ordinary file into the Command output window by
  150.       capturing the output from the DOS TYPE command.

  152. ENHANCEMENTS:
  153. -------------
  154.  
  155.   In This Release:
  156.   ----------------
  157.     The Edit menu, and right button context menus have been redesigned to
  158.     offer more features in a concise form.
  159.     
  160.     Settings for Tabs, File Filters, and Hypertext expressions have been
  161.     moved from the Configure menu to tabs on the Options dialog box.
  162.     
  163.     Settings for Document Properties have been moved to a tabbed dialog
  164.     box, which includes a Statistics tab showing the word count, and
  165.     when the file was last saved.
  166.     
  167.     The status bar is now "active".  Double clicking a pane changes its
  168.     setting, except for Caps lock, Scroll lock, and word-wrap mode.
  169.     
  170.     There's a new edit command to transpose adjacent words.
  171.     
  172.     In auto-indent mode, a closing '}' on a line on its own is
  173.     automatically unindented.
  174.     
  175.     The Tools menu now supports up to 16 user-defined tools, including
  176.     menu separators.
  177.     
  178.     The Find in Files Command scrolls its output faster.
  179.  
  180.   In The Last Release:
  181.   --------------------
  182.     A Select All command has been added to the Edit menu.
  183.  
  184.     You can now print multiple copies to printers that don't support it
  185.     in hardware.
  186.  
  187.     If a file containing null characters is edited, you get warned that
  188.     they will be replaced with spaces, rather than getting a hex view
  189.     of the file.
  190.  
  191.     You can now make TextPad stay on top of all other windows.  This is
  192.     set from the View tab of the Options dialog box.  NB. It stays on top
  193.     of online help as well!
  194.  
  195.     The maximum number of files on the Files menu has increased from 9
  196.     to 16.
  197.  
  198. KNOWN PROBLEMS:
  199. ---------------
  200.     The 32-bit edition cannot print to HP DeskJet 500 printers using the
  201.     HP driver under Win32s.  This is an HP/Win32s problem.  The workaround
  202.     is to install the Microsoft driver for this printer instead.
